The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) says that they are allowing the extra 10,000 undergraduates to be recruited in subjects important to the economy. They have listed those subjects that they believe 'to be important to the economy':

Good to see that Peter Mandelson thinks my businesses is important to the economy. Not so good to see he's so blinkered that I might be a top class young professional in my field without having a mickey-mouse degree in it.

Yeah I know someone who does Zoology at Holloway. Let's just say I don't like him. I also knew someone else, he was alrite, tried to save a stag beetle which bit him anyway. That was sad.
